June 10, 2020 - The President of the Green Destinations organization, Albert Salman, sent congratulations and expressions of support to the President of the Municipality of Tivat, Dr. Siniša Kusovac, on what was done during the epidemiological crisis, but also on the initiative of Tivat to join this program.

At the end of May, the Tourist Organization of Tivat initiated procedures to join the Green Destinations network. It announced that in June, they would start the process of the primary analysis, coordination, and definition of existing and new activities, with a chance to obtain a certificate from the Green Destinations program.

Albert Salman: Congratulations to Tivat on his candidacy for Green Destinations
"First of all, we cordially congratulate you on the successful policy and action and the set of measures taken by Montenegro and the Municipality of Tivat in the situation with COVID-19, which from June 1, 2020, allows the recovery of the process of promoting Montenegro as a thriving destination.

Together with the above success, we would like to commend your timely decision to unite sustainable development and tourism policies with the systematic support of Green Destinations and the Global Criteria for Sustainable Tourism, "Salman said in a letter to President Kusovac.

Salman added that Tivat is a pilot destination in Montenegro with excellent preconditions to achieve success on an ambitious path to a green and genuinely sustainable tourism future.

"Tivat is now one of over 200 destinations in 50+ countries, dedicated to sustainability. Our common goal is to "build better", with adequate opportunities to improve your sustainability, quality, competitiveness, visibility, and marketing, while gaining independent recognition for our efforts - in a systematic, neutral and transparent way.

We are pleased to be able to consider Tivat as a possible host of Global Green Destinations in 2022 or 2023. We wish you and your team of the municipality, the organization of destinations for Tivat and your citizens all the happiness and joy in future achievements ", concluding the letter of Albert Salman, President of Green Destinations.

The Council for Global Sustainable Tourism (GSTC) shared in the global bulletin the news about the initiative of the Tourist Organization of Tivat and the Municipality of Tivat to obtain the Green Destinations certificate.

June 5, 2020 - The first Blue Flag in Montenegro this year will be raised on June 8, on the World Ocean and Sea Day, at the "Kalardovo" beach in Tivat. On that occasion, all the winners of the exclusive world eco-label in our country will be announced.

The international recognition "Blue Flag" is an exclusive ecological feature that is awarded annually to beaches and marinas whose users want to participate in this program and meet a total of 32 binding criteria. In Montenegro, this recognition has been awarded since 2003 thanks to the NGO "ECOM" from Kotor, became a member of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), and thus gained the right to be a National Operator with the financial and organizational support of the Public Company "Morsko Dobro."

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, an international Blue Flag jury met online on April 21 to evaluate the applications of over 4,500 candidates for the 2020 Northern Hemisphere. Extensive preparations by the International team ensured that the online format did not interfere with the quality and results of the meeting.

The International Jury of the Blue Flag in 2020 consisted of Peter Kristensen, European Environment Agency (EEA), David R. Green, Coastal & Marine Union (EUCC), Birguy Lamizana, United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Sophie Lewis, World Cetacean Alliance (WCA), Bernard Combes (UNESCO), Jean-Michel Gaigné, International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA), Erik Bech, International Life Saving Federation (ILS), Dirk Glaesser, World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) & Lourdes Diaz (FEE) ).

The April meeting was also an opportunity to select the winners of the first competition for the best environmental practices at Blue Flag sites in over 40 countries.

The international jury says that the global crisis of COVID-19 will affect the upcoming season of the Blue Flag in the northern hemisphere, and asks that all awarded locations apply local and national health guidelines above all other rules. In these uncertain times, it is essential to remember the important role that the Blue Flag plays in supporting local communities and tourists to identify safe and sustainable destinations. Thanks to the recognized excellence of the Blue Flag award, the public can be sure that it will be safe to visit the places where the blue flag is flying this summer as well.

Last year, 30 beaches waved the Blue Flag in Montenegro. Among the marinas, Marina Bar deserved this recognition, while there were 14 more beaches in the pilot phase for obtaining this ecological label.

May 1, 2020 - The tourism and travel sector is most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. From the experience of some earlier complicated periods, it is an industry that tends to recover rapidly after the crisis is over, which is of utmost importance for economies such as Montenegro, which is a priority branch of tourism, emphasized the director of Tivat Tourism Organization, Danica Banjević.

"As for the Tivat Tourism Organization, in cooperation with hoteliers and private accommodation providers, we are preparing for the summer season and the postseason. We will forward them to the National Tourism Organization because we are planning a campaign with them that will be realized as soon as the conditions for this are created.

The prices are very competitive at the moment, and we also offer some additional services for booking individual capacities, which I believe will determine a significant number of tourists to make Tivat their summer destination," Banjevic said.

The critical question is how and when the borders and airports will be opened, and what procedures must be followed in this regard when it comes to health and safety aspects when tourists arrive at a particular destination.

"We have announcements that catering facilities and hotels will be opened on May 18, so in that area, we are expecting those rules and procedures that they must follow when opening their facilities.
The opening of borders and the Airport will not only depend on Montenegro but also on the situation and the opening of borders in other broadcast markets. Indeed, we should think in the direction of some bilateral agreements and the opening of tourist corridors, as we have information that neighboring Croatia is planning," said Danica Banjević, the TO Tivat director.

December 4, 2019 - Once a small town of artisans and fishers, who spent their days with a song and a glass of wine, Tivat today writes a new history of its life by the sea. It is attracting expensive and modern boats, while small fishing and family boats are still rocking in the port of Kalimanj, hoping that there will be room for them. Among these boats, three belong to Filip. What do they have to say to us?

Filip Maslovaric would not be an unusual 20-year-old if he were not a registered commercial fisherman, a successful sports fisherman, a skilled craftsman, and a proud member of the Music Society of Tivat for ten years. While the people of Tivat are less and less living with the sea, and the skills of our old people mostly go with them, Filip manages to capture something new from that ancient knowledge every day, believing that he has chosen the right professional path. For him, it was not just a job but a lifestyle he felt like a boy and wished as his own.

Filip has been playing music and fishing since he was little. A student of Tivat Primary Music School, at the age of 11, he took up the trumpet and joined the city orchestra. Fishing equipment has been part of his daily life since he knew about himself. Filip spends a lot of time at sea, practicing traditional as well as modern fishing techniques. And he developed the skills of handicrafts out of need, taking care of his boat. Today he is often hired to help others, mending and remodeling both small and larger ships.

TMN: All this would not be unusual if we were talking about a young man from Tivat from a past time when our city was a completely different environment. How it came for you to choose your wet pants in the boat while your peers mostly drink coffee, hoping for managerial positions?

Filip Maslovaric: I started as a kid playing sports with the ball. I started with football, but soon realized it wasn't for me. But even before that, I was playing in Kalimanj, fishing for cuttlefish. I also tried basketball, but even that didn't appeal to me enough. More and more, I stayed by the sea and became more interested in fishing. In a couple of years, I managed to buy my first boat and set off for the open sea. Apart from playing, I started fishing early as a sports angler, a member of Fishing Club Pagar. I have a lot of national and international competitions behind me, so that played an essential role in getting me into this whole story.

TMN: It also seems very important that you are living in Kalimanj, that you have been surrounded by boats and fishers since you were a kid.

Filip Maslovaric: Of course, all these people whom I had the honor of hanging out with as a young child contributed to my active involvement in the fishing world. I met daily with fishers, those engaged, and those who used to do this before. Through the stories of their own experiences and the experiences of other people, I was able to capture the knowledge of some old fishing techniques. These techniques are now coming back a bit. Again, people enjoy sharp-edged fishing, live-barking for sea bass. I mostly heard about those old techniques from stories, trying, and getting into it over time.

TMN: Fishing from the game, then sport fishing. Today, at the age of only 20, you are a registered commercial fisherman.

Filip Maslovaric: True. In May this year, I took out a fishing license for coastal fishing. That license is valid for the tools that I chose to use. The biggest challenge is still illegal competition. Better control of offshore activity began but not enough, which is my conclusion as someone who is at sea every day. I believe this will be put in order. For the time being, the big problem is the lack of vessels and the personnel to control it. Still, the number of illegal fishers and using forbidden tools and not respecting the hunting area is an even bigger problem. Our awareness of the sea is the biggest problem, though.

TMN: Knowing all the challenges you will face, you still decided to turn your hobby into a business, you signed up for commercial fishing.

Filip Maslovaric: I wanted to deal with this business correctly. I registered to avoid paying penalties. Stricter controls have been announced, and I am at sea every day. And it probably would happen to me not once, but often to get caught in the wrong by the authorities. The process of obtaining a permit is no small business, but in the long run, you can only benefit from legal w. This kind of license does not mean people who do not spend as much time at sea as I do, but it does. I am pleased to say that I am one of the legal fishermen of Tivat and Boka.

TMN: In the process of accession to the European Union, Montenegro has also opened a chapter on fisheries, which strictly prescribes both catch quotas and the number of commercial fishing licenses that the state can issue to interested fishers. How many of those who live offshore choose a path like yours?

Filip Maslovaric: There indeed are many more that do not hold licenses at sea. But, even those who enter this business with uncertainty accept this role of fishers. It is a job that does not promise safe earnings. He lives and works from day to day, month to month, and every year has something of his own. Some fish appear, let them almost disappear, have them in minimal quantities. Therefore, no one can promise you a safe catch. And the tools cost a lot; the ships need to be registered. Ship maintenance and maintenance are costly. Therefore, many fishers are insecure. I believe that many people think deeply and with fear that it is a better path for them - to be legal or to continue the illegal route, waiting to be punished. But for all these reasons, it should not surprise us.

TMN: You are very thorough when it comes to your job. Although very young, you already have a small fleet of vessels adapted to the various fishing techniques you practice.

Filip Maslovaric: I have three vessels, each with its purpose. To fish in shallow waters, I have a boat that doesn't have a high draft so I can get as close as possible to the shore. The fish sometimes need to reach only 30-40 cm deep when riding under the axes. Therefore, not every vessel fits that purpose. I also have a cabin with a cabin, which can also go to the open sea, sleep as needed, getaway, and we can get away from the winter. I also have a third, slightly larger wooden vessel. If I develop the business as I imagined, it will serve as a vessel for something.

TMN: You also have experience in tourism, if we are talking about fishing. During the summer months, you sometimes take guests to fish.

Filip Maslovaric: Not so often, but I had the opportunity to host some people on my boat and take them to fish. There is not much of this interest. Usually older couples, or some older gentlemen who had the opportunity to go fishing in some other countries in a similar way, so they wanted to enjoy our gulf from the experiences of those experiences, and spend one morning or one evening at sea. I believe they enjoyed the barge with me. There's always music, a glass of wine for them, they're happy to get off the ship. It doesn't have to be too many fish, but also one fish they catch with the opportunity to be a part of our thick sea - I am sure that all these experiences remain in good memory. The very activity that I do leads me as an individual to such an attitude towards the people who come to us - to show them how we do it, to take them to some places, to bring them closer to our local, authentic way of life.

TMN: We won't ask you to give us your fishing positions, but in the end, we can ask - which fish works best this time of year? What tools do you currently use to get her head?

Filip Maslovaric: In this period, we are fishing less for longlines. We equip the boat for scavenging. The fish are coming to the shore, there may be a gilthead, a sea bass, maybe a tuft, even though it's too early for them. This year the sea is much warmer than usual in this stall. As you can see, the weather is such that it did not allow the sea temperature to drop. To cool the sea a little more, the fish comes to shore. And we're waiting for it with the lights on!

November 20, 2019 - By the removal of one of the remaining two large pine trees Pinus Pinea from the former garden of the Hotel "Mimoza" on the waterfront in Tivat, the destruction of this once valuable horticultural entity continued, which from the beginning follows the realization of the Mimoza Group project - construction of a condo-hotel with by the same name on the site of the first Tivat hotel. In addition to the outraged citizens, the drying and removal of the pine tree caused the reaction of the Municipality of Tivat, which seeks action by the competent inspection services.

The Municipality of Tivat condemns this way of treating natural values and urges the competent institutions to sanction those responsible for the decay of one of the oldest and most beautiful trees in the city center of Tivat, says Tamara Furtula, the secretary of the Secretariat for Spatial Planning and Sustainable Development.

Workers were using a crane to cut and remove a large pine tree that had completely dried up in recent months, after a Russian investor destroyed its root, digging land near a tree and building two floors of underground garages. After this, there is only one more large pine tree left in the eastern corner of this plot, but the citizens of Tivat suspect that it will soon be destroyed as its lower branches "enter" space where the second floor of the new hotel should be.

Most of the herbs in the formerly luxurious park of the Mimoza Hotel have been cut since 2016 when the old Mimoza Hotel and a 4,600-square-foot plot of land were sold to a new owner, Mimoza Group, behind which stands Russian capital. They demolished the old hotel, which paid 6.5 million euros, and in its place, after changing the planning documents according to their wishes, began the construction of a new condominium hotel with the old name.

The Municipality of Tivat has repeatedly addressed the inspection bodies regarding the devastation of the green area on which the dried pine-tree is located, as it has been recognized through the spatial-planning and environmental documentation as a green area that needs to be preserved and upgrade. Specific protection of the trees at this location was to be ensured through compliance with the measures prescribed by the Environmental Impact Assessment Study, developed for the project of the new hotel, the Municipality of Tivat pointed out.

"For the construction of the Hotel Mimoza 5 *, an Environmental Impact Assessment Study was prepared and approved by the Agency for Nature and Environmental Protection, within which landscape taxation was carried out - a description of the vegetation at the subject site was given, and categorization of trees was performed. On this occasion, it was determined that the two largest pine trees with trunks over 1m in diameter, one of which has recently dried, fall into category A - high-quality trees (for conservation). Within the landscape taxation, the so-called "root protection zone," indicating how far the tree can be approached when excavating without the risk of root damage. Both imposing specimens of pine nuts by the Environmental Impact Assessment Lab are scheduled for on-site conservation," reads a statement sent by the municipal information service.

According to the Municipality of Tivat, the company "Mimoza Group" on October 8, 2019, addressed by letter to the Secretariat for Spatial Planning and Sustainable Development, stating that the pine tree had dried, that it was a danger to passersby and construction site workers. They asked for consent to remove that tree as soon as possible.

"The Secretariat for Spatial Planning and Sustainable Development is not competent to issue the required permit, and given the severe damage to the landscape, ambient and horticultural values of the city center, this authority has submitted a report to the Inspection Directorate - Department for Environmental Inspection. As the authority responsible for controlling whether the project developer implements the measures prescribed by the Environmental Impact Assessment Study to which the consent has been issued,  the Tivat Municipality explained.

The company "Mimoza Group" then again addressed the Municipality of Tivat with a letter informing about the removal of the dried pine tree, after which the Secretariat for Spatial Planning and Sustainable Development back submitted a report to the Directorate for Inspection - Department for Environmental Inspection. The Secretariat also addressed the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism - Directorate for Inspection and Licensing, requesting an inspection of project documentation and control of activities carried out in the field.  The Municipality suspects that the area of root protection was not respected during the execution of works, which led to root damage and subsequent drying of the tree.

"I expect the inspection authorities to take appropriate measures to punish those responsible for the immeasurable damage to the city. I declare that such a case of damage to natural values will not go unpunished," said Secretary of the Secretariat for Spatial Planning and Sustainable Development, Tamara Furtula.

November 18, 2019 -The typical and unrelenting atmosphere of heavy rain and southern wind of the Boka region was not an obstacle for the numerous audiences who traveled to Gornja Lastva to enjoy a multimedia program entitled "Boka - Area of Mysterious Beauty."  Cultural Heritage Organization Napredak Gornja Lastva organized the event to join in celebrating the November Days of the Municipality of Tivat.

Last night's heavy rain was an adequate overture to the screening of a short film by Kotor author Dušan Vuleković, entitled "Južina." By skillful combinations of scenes and sounds, with three protagonists, Vuleković was able to fully evoke the atmosphere of nature and the state of man faced with her relentlessness - characteristic melancholy of southern weather in the bay, from which neither the hills of Boka nor the man, is compelled to escape.

The melancholic poetics of Frano Alfirevic, a poet who, in the first half of the 20th century, sang nostalgically with his verses and prose about Boka southerners and the details of his life, was spoken about by professor of literature, Neven Stanicic:

"For Frano Alfirević, Boka is a place where nature speaks with primal power and primordial purity. The post-storm Boka is a place that brings us back to the first days of the world. The sea with him evokes respect and fear, the fear that man has just in confronting himself. And, as much as it is a commonplace - I never had any idea that we would experience the same sentence in the film - that it is challenging and inconvenient to encounter ourselves during the heavy rain, which here lasts for days."

Actress Dubravka Drakić presented Alfirević's prose and poems, followed by carefully selected tunes performed by our exceptional cellist, Maja Antić.

The smell of rain on Bokelian night was joined by the scent of Priganice prepared by housewives at the Ilija Marković Cultural Center in Gornja Lastva. With Rakijas enriched with Vrmac herbs and fruits, both locals and guests, last night, felt once again all the senses of Boka, the area of the mysterious beauty.

Tivat has recorded a 24% increase in the number of tourists, compared with last year. With the same increase in the number of overnight stays, Tivat had more than a million overnights in the first nine months of this year. Tourists were mostly from Russia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, Great Britain, China, France, the USA, Ukraine, Croatia and Hungary, said director of Tourist Organization Tivat, Ms Gabrijela Glavočić, at the conference marking the end of the summer season.

Between 1 May and 1 September, a total of €293.000 of local taxes have been collected, 21% more compared with 2018.

President of the Municipality of Tivat, Mr Siniša Kusovac, pointed out that competent municipal services and enterprises had significantly contributed to the successful summer season in Tivat.

“This year Tivat got the highest rank ever in the survey that encompasses a wide range of elements and aspects of tourism season. Interestingly, Tivat is still a favorite when it comes to relaxation and rest. Its cleanliness is the third most appreciated factor that makes tourists come back. Seawater quality has been K1 throughout the whole season. The credit goes to our municipal services,” said Mr Kusovac.

In pre-season and during the season, TO Tivat operated following the existing strategic objectives of the development of tourism and it significantly contributed to maintaining the status of a high-quality destination that Tivat enjoys.

“Promotional materials have been translated to German, Russian, English and French. Apart from many brochures, we also made a calendar of events – “TIVTOVANJE 2019 (“TIVTING 2019″)”. It was distributed to more than 5.000 addresses in the region”, said Ms Glavočić.

TO promoted the authenticity of the destination through trade fairs and presentations in the country and abroad. TO of Tivat emphasized its richness of local characteristics and customs, contributing to numerous projects relevant to the municipality.

“TO Tivat used the beginning of the year to create new strategies for taking part in tourism trade fairs, to promote the entire region. The idea was to promote and present Boka and its three towns: Tivat, Kotor and Herceg Novi. It was an impressive presentation because it showcased the specificity of a region – cultural heritage, tradition, folklore, cuisine and other attractions”, said Ms Glavočić.

According to Ms Glavočić, this year again, Tivat carried out many important promotional actions. Texts about Tivat were distributed all across the region.

“Two great projects were carried out in pre-season – promotion of Hello travel Boka magazine and the first Pictorial glossary about Tivat. “Tivting” definitely was a boom this year”, added Ms Glavočić.

Thanks to the activities above, Tivat got the highest rank so far in the regular survey.
