January 15, 2019 - For the second year in a row, Kotor is among 20 cultural tourism centers the European Best Destination website is proposing as the best for 2019. The competition officially began today and lasts until 5 February. On this occasion, we have spoken to the director of the Tourism Organization of Kotor, Ana Nives Radovic.

"The nomination of Kotor for the best tourist destination in Europe is remarkable since it is a website that is one of the most visited in the world and the most visited sites in Europe when we talk about websites specializing in culture and tourism. For six years it has been the best site in Europe for tourism and promotion. The visibility itself, just mentioning Kotor on it is significant, and any further placement in the coming days of voting will further increase the significance of attendance on this list," says TMN Ana Nives Radovic.

Kotor found itself in the company of famous and well-known European centers such as London, Paris, and Berlin. From our region, along with Kotor, on the list of 20 European destinations is Cavtat in the neighboring Croatia. However, Kotor competed for the best cultural tourism center in Europe and 2018.

"Kotor is the only city in our region that is on this list for the second year consecutively. Cities on this list change very often; very rarely is there one city in succession. However, Kotor has retained this position, so it is obvious that we are a prestigious cultural tourism center," the director of TO Kotor said proudly.

The fact that Kotor has come to the side with large European centers, when we talk about the offer of tourism, emphasizes the fact that in Kotor there is an invaluable cultural treasure that has excellent potential for the development of cultural tourism products.

"It is a goal and purpose, not just the European Best Destination organization, on whose site is the whole promotion, but also the network created by the European Commission, which deals with the public's knowledge of the potential of cultural tourism. Tourism is generally beginning to perceive otherwise. There is a growing interest in cultural tourism, and there is growing interest in destinations where the offer is as intense as possible, as available as possible and as varied as possible. So it is not surprising that Kotor is a part of it, although it cannot compare with the other proposed destinations for many other aspects. The possibilities offered by this placement as well as our presence in tourist facilities around the world justify the fact that Kotor is on such lists. The percentage of the cultural treasure that exists in Kotor and the fact that it is a UNESCO site abolishes every reason why the size of the city is a factor in its nomination," explains Ana Nives Radovic.

"Not only this nomination but also the numerous opportunities that opened in Kotor for the previous years, are conditioned by its uniqueness regarding the experience that tourists have in the destination they are visiting in one day. Kotor as a destination has the fate of tourists visiting the city during one day. It is precisely the visitors who in these competitions are making the final decision whether we justify the status of a destination for which there is so much to see and experience for a short time. From their court will depend on the final placement of Kotor."

The growing market for cultural tourism and the presence of Kotor on various lists of the best destinations in Europe and the world are valuable reasons to take into account the ICOMOS data that every euro invested in cultural heritage when combining this heritage with tourism brings the destination of seven Euros per year. That is the reason that both local and national institutions devote themselves to the preservation and revitalization of cultural heritage in the area of Kotor and Boka Bay.

"This nomination is an additional reason to re-emphasize that as the Kotor Tourism Organization, with the support of other institutions in Kotor, I hope this year will enable ten percent of the revenue of collecting bill fees to be set aside for restoration, conservation, and protection of cultural goods. Practice shows that the world is so, and UNESCO status and all such recognition and nomination oblige us, not only for securing tourism income but above all because of the concern of the city itself that the funds we make through tourism, invest in what allows us such nominations and such visibility," concluded Radovic.

Th European Best Destination for 2019 is chosen by the audience, who can vote for one of the 20 proposed destinations from today, 15 January, until 5 February. The winner will receive the European Best Destination Award 2019. The other cities will achieve promotion during the whole year 2019 to millions of travelers, media and tourism professionals as being among the trendiest destinations to visit in 2019.

European Best Destinations is a European organization based in Brussels and is developed to promote culture and tourism in Europe. Thanks to excellent communication with an audience of e-citizens, European Best Destinations plays an essential role in presenting Europe as the number one destination in the world. It has become a meeting place for tourism offices and world travelers and the main gateway to the discovery of Europe since 2009.

January 13, 2018 - The core of the Mimosa Festival in Herceg Novi is the Feast of Mimosa, Fish, and Wine on the Riviera, from Kumbor to Bijela. Traditionally on the first Saturday of the Mimosa festival, this event brings together a large number of Herceg Novi citizens, as well as guests. The most visited is the Baosici Local Community, where the central Feast's event is traditionally held.

According to the president of the local community Baošići, Djuro Cvjetkovic, preparations for the Feast run with planned dynamics. With the weather, the Riviera could see over 20,000 visitors in Baošići.

This year's organization brings much news, as the goal is to fulfill the entire walkway through Baošići. Instead of 10, there will be 12 pitches where the hosts will prepare fried sardines and cuttlefish, and there are also three locations with music:

"The music program will take place in front of the House of Culture; some music will be at Fishermen's Cooperative because it is the place where this Feast began 50 years ago. The location for the third music point will be located in the second part of Baošići, towards Bijela, somewhere near Hotel Max. We have not yet determined the exact location," explains Cvjetkovic.

On the day after the Feast, the "Fragrances and Taste of February," a bazaar of healthy food, will be held in Baošići, because the wish of this local community is to continue the activities of the Mimosa Festival on the Riviera.

On the second day of the Feast, guests will also have a chance to taste fish, wine, brandy, pickles, and follow a cultural-artistic program and a competition in preparing black risotto.

"Our goal is to welcome guests who come to Baosici and along the entire Riviera and give them the reason to revisit our place," says Cvjetkovic.

He praised the cooperation with all businessmen from Baošići during the summer season, which is why he expects that during the Mimosa Festival this cooperation will be good. Among the significant accommodation providers, the Hotel Max and the Damjanović villa are open every year during the Mimosa Festival.

13 January 2019 - TUI UK, a UK-based travel operator, recommends Montenegro as the perfect destination to have the most amazing holiday. This organisation offers useful advice on where to go, what to see, how to prepare for a trip and more!

Beautiful beaches, lively resorts, and spectacular scenery – you’ll find them all on holiday to Montenegro, Europe’s under-the-radar spot.

Balkan beauty

With great beaches, forest-cloaked mountains and mirror-like lakes, Montenegro is certainly easy on the eye. But natural beauty isn’t all the country has got going for it. You’ll also find friendly locals, centuries-old sights and resorts that are completely geared up for holidaymakers.

Budva Riviera

The town of Budva is the main resort on the country’s Budva Riviera. It’s a lively place with a handful of first-class beaches to pick from. The old town is characterised by Venetian houses, bell towers and shady piazzas, while the newer part of the city houses swish boutiques and pavement cafés.

Bečići

A few kilometres down the road is Bečići, a modern town with a spectacular sandy beach and a backdrop of pine-cloaked hills. At the far end of the promenade, you’ll find quirky shops and al fresco cafés in the old fishing village.

Petrovac

Further south is Petrovac. It’s sleepier than its neighbours, so it’s a great choice if you want to turn the tempo down a few notches. The beach is a big attraction here – it’s a sandy number set in a horseshoe-shaped bay.

Best time to go to Montenegro

The coastal areas of Montenegro enjoy hot summers and mild winters. November to March are the coldest months. At this time of year, average daily temperatures range from 10˚C to 15˚C. Things begin to warm up in April, and the heat reaches its peak in July and August when the mercury regularly climbs up into the high twenties. Trips into the mountains offer respite from the heat. The temperature here can be as much as much as 7 degrees cooler than the coast. Montenegro is pretty wet in the winter, but summers only experience 4 to 7 showers every month, and they don’t last long.

Passports & Visas

British citizens don’t need a visa to enter Montenegro but must have a valid passport.

Health & Safety

You should take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance to cover you while you’re away. The Foreign & Commonwealth Office and National Travel Health Network and Centre have up-to-date advice on staying safe and healthy abroad.

12 January 2019 - In the exhibition hall of the Cultural and Information Centre "Budo Tomović," on Friday, January 11, at 7 pm, an unusual exhibition of photographs of graffiti in Podgorica named "The Street Writes with its Heart" will be opened. The author of the exhibition is Marko Vujović, and CIC director Snežana Burzan will open the exhibition.

When you think about an art exhibition, a person usually does not think of an area full of graffiti. Still, the Cultural and Information Centre wants to embrace contemporary trends and offer different experiences to suit everyone's tastes. That's how the idea of the graffiti exhibition arose.

This is the first exhibition of photographs of graffiti in Podgorica and Montenegro, and the author, with the help of the editor of the CIC art program Damiro Hodžić, has had a difficult task in making a choice from a rich collection of photographs of graffiti from the buildings and streets of Podgorica from 2015 to 2018.

"Graffiti represents one of the methods by which a particular group of young people communicates with the environment. The themes of the graffiti are divided into several segments (love, music, local speech, quits, socio-economic condition). Any hate speech is omitted, to emphasize the creativity through humorous and meaningful messages and questions that occupy young people’s minds”, said the representatives of the CIC "Budo Tomović".

The author wanted to demonstrate the world of graffiti and street art and celebrate this dynamic modern art movement. Diverse styles of street art will be presented at this exhibition so that visitors can expect variations in handwriting styles and lettering concepts found throughout the streets of the city today.

This exhibition can be viewed until January 21. So, will you make the trip down to Podgorica and visit one of the most unusual exhibitions in Montenegro?

12 January 2019 - National food products are a powerful feature and a promotional tool for presenting Montenegro as a tourist destination. The delicacies from the country represent a valuable and profitable segment of the national heritage and traditional values, announced the Chamber of Economy of Montenegro.

"The national food products placement through tourism represents a unique form of export when the product is kept within country borders, and the potentials of this kind of product placement should be used as much as possible," Chamber’s representatives stated for Mina-business News Agency.

The Chamber said that Montenegrin products enjoy a good reputation and that the potential for their placement on the foreign market is continuously increasing, even though the globalization era carries many struggles for producers.

According to the Chamber’s representatives, tourists do not seek food products that originate from the countries they come. Instead, they want Montenegrin gastronomic gems that will remind them of the beautiful moments they spent "between the mountains and the sea." It is these moments, as the Chamber of Economy emphasizes, that can be beautifully coloured with the blushes of the wines from the Ćemovsko field and the prosciutto created under Njeguši, the golden beer below the Trebjesa and the honey from untouched meadows, whitish milk from mountain pastures and crystal clear water from mountain springs.

The local flavour is, as they claim, the best souvenir.

Chamber of Economy also reminded that in 2009 they launched the project “Goods from Montenegro”, with the aim of recognising, highlighting and marking quality Montenegrin products. The representatives stated that the goal of this project is difficult - to change the purchasing habits of consumers, so that domestic products, which have a pre-tested and unique quality, safety, freshness, flavour, and smell, can get a place that they deserve.

The Economic Chamber concluded that the national home-made delicacies deserve to be on the Montenegrin dining tables and to become the best part of the tourist offer which will glorify Montenegro as a tourist destination.

January 11, 2019 - Last year, Montenegrin tourism achieved many record-breaking results, and post-season prolongation has shown that the country is pursuing a strategic goal to become a year-round tourist destination, said the National Tourism Organization's Director Željka Radak Kukavičić.

According to official figures from the Institute for Statistics for Collective Accommodation and Estimates of National Tourism Organisation and Local Tourism Organizations for Individual Accommodation, during the ten months of last year, Montenegro was visited by more than 2.1 million tourists who realized nearly 12.5 million overnight stays, said Radak Kukavičić in an interview with the agency Mina-business.

Compared to the same period in 2017, the number of tourists increased by about 10 percent and the number of overnight stays is more significant by eight percent. During the first nine months of last year, tourism turnover exceeded the total turnover achieved during 2017," said the National Tourism Organisation's Director.

According to the Central Bank (CBCG) data, foreign tourist revenues during the first ten months of last year exceeded one billion euros.

"After a great pre-season and a successful season, the post-season has also shown that Montenegro is going to achieve the strategic goal, which is to be a year-round tourist destination," said Radak Kukavicic.

The post-season lasted until November, so it almost merged with the beginning of the winter season, which is the primary goal of eliminating seasonality and wiping the seasonal boundary because Montenegro is interesting for tourists throughout the year.

"What has been remarkably marked in Montenegrin tourism last year, among other things, is the opening of 25 new hotels, which opened about a thousand new doors for tourists," said Radak Kukavičić.

She talked about the current offer in the winter season, saying that the state in the last period is becoming better positioned as a destination for New Year's Eve.
Director Radak Kukavičić announced that National Tourism Organisation would continue its activities in the direction of Montenegro as a high-quality tourist destination this year.

January 11, 2019 - To promote a tourist offer based on an active holiday in nature, the National Parks of Montenegro (NPCG) participated at the Tourism Fair in Vienna together with the National Tourism Organization of Montenegro. In addition to representatives of NPCG and the National Tourism Organization, representatives of the Montenegrin tourist industry participated in the "Ferien Messe 2019" fair in Vienna, from 10 to 13 January.

Numerous visitors to the fair were interested in the tourist offer of all five national parks of Montenegro, hiking, mountaineering, biking, river rafting on the Tara, camping, as well as all other forms of an active holiday in nature.

NPCG continuously promotes the tourist offer based on active tourism and tourists increasingly want to visit and meet the five national parks. The beauty and untouched nature of the five national parks of Montenegro, with a variety of tourist offers, is one of the main motives of visiting our country.

Montenegro can be proud of its five small national parks: Lovcen, Skadar Lake, Durmitor, Biogradska Gora and Prokletije.

The National Parks of Montenegro achieved a successful tourist season during the past year and the number of visitors from about 450,000 tourists, which is about 30% more than in 2017. Also, in co-operation with the National Tourism Organization, the NPCG participated in the most significant regional and international tourism fairs where they presented a tourism offer based on active tourism and received significant tourist awards. What has further enhanced the promotion of natural and cultural values and a variety of tourist offers was the design of mobile applications and platforms that interactively present numerous attractions of protected areas as well as the new visual identity of NPCG, which represents national parks as a brand.

For the tourism industry, the "Ferien" fair is the leading fair in the Austrian market, where all sectors of the tourism industry are present, and business users have the opportunity to establish valuable contacts with tour operators and the media from the Austrian market. The fair every year visits a large number of media outlets and more than 150,000 visitors.

12 January 2019 - On January 12, Swiss DJ and producer Deetron will perform at the District Club in Podgorica. The party starts at 11 pm, and Deetron will play until 3 am. Cule DJ will be in charge of the warm-up, and the entry fee is 8 EUR.

Over the course or a career spanning more than two decades, Deetron has defined himself as one of the most dynamic artists in electronic music, continuously evolving his sound and style. Growing up in Bern, Switzerland, Deetron grew up in a musical home – his father was a double bass player – and was inspired when his childhood friend won the Swiss regional DMC heats. Listening to local hero DJ Djaimin and later witnessing an eye-opening set from Detroit legend Jeff Mills helped him to form a deep understanding of the fundamental pillars of what it means to be a great DJ – a deep record bag and a dedicated commitment to technical prowess.

Skip forward two decades and this relentless pursuit of excellence is evidenced in everything Deetron does – a master of three decks, few DJs on the planet can match his agility and poise in the booth. As a producer, Deetron has released a similarly accomplished string of records over the more than ten years, each honing in on a coherent but unique sound palette. For his second album ‘Music Over Matter’, released on Music Man records in 2013, the vocal element of his music came to the fore with a collection of collaborations and dance floor – ready tracks that incorporated ” a prismatic mosaic of vocal textures and expertly crafted grooves.”

Swiss DJ and producer Deetron Comes to Podgorica January 12 2

In 2014 Deetron’s imprint Character was launched as well as the release of his Fabric 76 mix. The first few releases on Character, including the ‘Mars EP’ (Deetron & Ripperton as Roots Panorama) and ‘Theory or Light EP’ (Deetron), incorporating the massive underground hit ‘Photon,’ demonstrated an ambitious search for dance music that resisted the confines of any specific genre. In 2016 a long-time friendship with DJ Bone resulted in the collaborative project ‘The StoryTellers’ with a well-received EP and standout B2B sessions at Concrete Paris, Shelter Amsterdam, Brunch Elektronik Lisbon and 909 Festival that showcase the dynamic energy from a meeting of kindred hearts and minds.

In 2017 Deetron surprised with a remix of”Automation’ by British funk band Jamiroquai, and went on to tour with them for a number of shows. At the start of 2018, he then added to the DJ-Kicks series with a mix featuring exclusive collaborations with Jamie Lidell and Steve Spacek. With a busy international touring schedule and more remarkable as-yet unannounced records on the way, Deetron will undoubtedly be contributing to the evolution of global dance music for years to come.

Kotor New Years Concert of Traditional Singing Customs and Dance on January 14 3

An interesting custom of the Singing Association Grbalj is that they have numerous young members, aged five to six years, and they perform with the adults on stage. The youngest members love the scene, and they have talent, which the audience recognises year after year and they get the biggest ovations.

Within this year's concert, which will be held on Monday, January 14th in Kotor, this Singing Association will once again demonstrate how the origin, past, and tradition of Grbalj can be presented uniquely.

The Singing Association "Grbalj" was founded in 2000 with the aim of protecting the cultural heritage of Grbalj, which has attracted the attention of a significant number of scientists: ethnologists, ethnomusicologists and archaeologists for centuries. The Association wants to introduce people to Grbalj’s customs and, at the same time, preserves the songs, customs, and traditions that originated from this area.

January 9, 2019 - Mountain Hajla on the border of Montenegro and Kosovo, on the second weekend of January, will host mountaineers from all over the region for the 22nd Memorial "Winter Climb of Safet Mavrić Ćako" organized by Mountain Club Hajla and the Tourist Organization of Rožaje. This year's climb is on Friday, 11 January.

hajlarozaje.me

The Hajla Memorial is one of the largest mountaineering events in Montenegro and carries the name of the famous mountaineer from Novi Pazar, who tragically hit the cliffs of Hajla on 6 January 1997. Safet Mavrić Cako spent a lot of time on Hajla preparing himself for numerous climbs and expeditions to the most demanding mountaineering destinations in the world. Thus, in January 1997, he was practicing here before heading for the Himalayan peaks. He was unlucky, and fell through the snow shelter near the tip of Hajla and lost his life," explains Anisa Bemić, a member of the Hajla Mountain Club and the Rožaje Tourist Organization Officer.

According to her, the memorial is a sporting challenge, but also an opportunity for mountaineers to remind themselves of the cautiousness and respect they need for the mountain. Hajla is still not tourism-valued, but has exceptional potential for the development of mountain tourism, primarily through offering content for winter sports.

It is a mountain in the east of Montenegro, on the border with Kosovo. It belongs to the eastern part of the massif Prokletije and is one of the most popular destinations of winter tourism in Montenegro.

"The 22nd Memorial Climb attracted hikers from across the region and beyond. Like every year, we have mountaineers from Bosnia, Serbia, Croatia, and Turkey. In recent years, more and more hikers are interested in participating."

Mountaineers will stay in “Katuni” in the village of Bandzov and in the mountain hut "Grope” at the very foot of the highest peak of the mountain of Hajla (2403 MNV). At the height of 1980 m, “Grope” is unique in the region. The capacity of the house is 40 beds and the other necessary accommodation facilities the Rožaje Tourist Organization provides in cooperation with the local population who has “Katuni” on the slopes of Hajla.

hajla2016 011photo by Zoran Radonjic

The climb starts at the mountain hut, and this is a very demanding track, so the participants are obliged to bring the complete mountaineering equipment.

"Of course, the weight of the rise dictates the weather. Last year, all the participants managed to get to the top of Hajla, while two years ago the weather conditions were such that only four mountaineers managed this," explains Anisa, who has been participating in the memorial for many years. According to her, last year's visit was the largest so far, and 146 hikers reached the top of Hajla.
Asked how much Hajla's natural resources contribute the tourist offer of the Rožaje region, Anisa Bemić explains:

"The Municipality of Rožaje has developed a project for the future ski center on the mountain wreath Hajla-Ahmica-Stedim within the framework of the IPA Cross-border Co-operation between Montenegro and Albania, which is the basic prerequisite for the devised economic development of this area with exceptional natural potentials," said Rožaje Tourism Organization official.

According to her, such development projects are entirely justified and should become the cornerstones of the future development of this part of Montenegro, which also shows a great interest for snow borderers, freeride skiers, round skiers and other adrenaline snow sports fans for Hajla and the surrounding mountains.
hajla2016 024

The Ahmica Mountain Club is developing a large mountain lodge near the border with Kosovo, which should complement the mountain offer of Rožaje.
"We hope to link Stedim, Ahmic, Hajla and village Bandzov soon and be able to offer an integral story in summer and winter," Anisa says, calling on tourists and Montenegrin citizens to discover the mountain masses in the east of Montenegro.

January 8, 2019 - “Kotor was also on the list of the world's best destinations for 2018 and thus justified the same status as 2017. It is a remarkable result given that the names of the world's metropolises are most frequently mentioned destinations in that list," the Kotor Tourist Organization’s director Ana Nives Radovic told Radio Kotor.

The popularity of Kotor, as she states, mainly comes thank to the city's panorama.

"Foreign journalists and bloggers, especially photojournalists, mostly positively evaluate the panorama of Kotor and view of the city from the city fortress. It prevails in the formation of the total impression, so the visitors neglect or suppresses those segments of the overall image of Kotor that might be better," says Radovic.

As mentioned, a market that will have great potential in the coming years is the Chinese, and there is a great interest for the Western Balkans from the US market.

"Around ten percent of Chinese citizens travel because this is the percentage of the Chinese population that has a passport. On the other hand, we should take into account that visa liberalization will take place throughout the region. In order for Chinese tourists to come to Montenegro, there must be a bilateral contract at the state level, but also between the agencies from China and Montenegro, because they do not leave anything to the case," she said, adding that the number of Chinese tourists benefiting the demand for luxury travelers is increasing.

"According to business figures from various companies, we see the biggest success of the companies which sold their luxury brands mostly in China. China's demand for brands dictates the results of the companies that are developing them," explains Ana Nives Radovic, by profession a financial analyst.

"The potential that Montenegro has is something that Chinese tourists have not started to use, but it will certainly be different in the coming years, and we have to prepare for it. That is why we have already prepared promotional materials and information in the Chinese language, we are following the situation and are planning to be ready to welcome them," Radovic told Radio Kotor.

According to her, there is a great interest for the Western Balkans also in the US market, where more and more media and travel bloggers are interested in Kotor as a tourist destination.

Ana Nives Radovic said that interest for Kotor is increasingly expressed by agencies that mediate in providing tourism services for family-friendly tourism destinations.
