The most striking and strategically crucial strait of Bay of Kotor is the Strait of Verige, which is opposite the town of Perast. Today, Verige is one of the most popular photo locations in the extremely photogenic Boka Bay, a place where the view leaves you breathless on both romantic summer evenings and the winter days when the snow falls down the hills of the Herzegovina Mountains, sometimes also covering  the coastal villages in Risan Bay and Perast itself.
verige coming from tivat

Imagine the surprise and fascination of cruise ships guests, who, after passing through Kumbor's Strait, opened to Tivat Bay? The sea surface reflects the scene, where like the eagles, the wings of Lovćen and the slopes of Orjen watch for the Bay. Everyone is instantly aware of the fact that he's coming to the area of unusual beauty. Here the “mountain wings“ are located in the hinterland of the Tivat plain, the impression is less intense than the landscape that opens before you then go to the Kotor-Risan basin through the strait of Verige. You do not need to be familiar with the history of this region to immediately feel the tremendous strategic and historical significance of this narrow sea strait, which marks the former border between the Christian towns of the bay and the Turkish Herceg Novi.

Verige through history

Thus, in 1498, Kotor's Venitian Governor asked for the Senate of the Venetian Republic to approve 350 ducats to build a fort at Verige. He claimed that there were already a lot of soldiers, and the money he had asked for was accepted.  But for some reason, landlords of Perast did not use it for the construction of the fort but obtained some cannons from that fond.

In the Verige strait, there were bloodstained battles in the late 15th century. The Governor of Kotor reported to his superiors in Venice that Turks threatened to set up some bastions on Verige and to transfer construction materials there. The Senate had a strong opinion about it and suggested to build two fortresses at Verige, one at each side of the strait. However, the Christian army at that stage was late because the Turks started to realize their plan. They dug up limescale holes on both sides and prepared everything for masonry. The Venetians had prevented that goal making Turkish builders leave the strait.

The Turks, however, made Kotor's Governor report to the Senate about the new Turkish preparations for the construction of a fortress at Verige after four years, and then again after four years. Indeed, the Turks then dropped out of the narrow Verige and built one of those fortresses at the strait of Kumbor, which was soon destroyed.

Our Lady of Angels in Verige

No matter how much the Venetians complained about the Turkish ventures around Verige, they were not ready to give up, so they raised the fortress with the grate and the church of Our Lady of Angels at the south-eastern cape of the strait. Although above the church door reads the years 1585 and 1654, it is considered that this church was created earlier and that its significant restorations were made in those years. Thus, in 1585, the landowners of the town of Perast rounded the church with loopholes and built a strategic fortress for the defense of this town. Inside the wall, there is a smaller one-store building, where the guards were probably located and through which they could enter the church. The church was destroyed on May 15, 1654, during the Turks' attack on Perast, but restored in the same year.
verige our lady of angels

From the Our Lady of Angels, there is a beautiful view of Perast and the island of Our Lady of Rock and Saint George. With its defending walls, the island of Saint George together with the fortification on the Cape of Our Lady of Angels aided the defense of Perast from the sea.

Are Verige chains?

The best historians of this region through centuries wrote about Verige. Ivan Lučić and Andrija Zmajević both think that the name Verige keeps a memory of a chain (in local dialect: verige) that prevented entry into the bay. Of course, this has different views, because the documents of the Historical Archives in Kotor gives rise to a different interpretation of the name Verige. It seems that the title of this strain does not come from chains, but from the Catena family, a noble family from Kotor, which in that part of the bay had possessions, whose name in Italian means chains or verige.

"It is possible that some guards occasionally set up chains on both sides of the straits to block access to unobtrusive ships in the wealthy cities that settled in the depths of the Kotor fjord due to sanitary or customs formalities," Croatian academic Slobodan Prosperov Novak wrote in his book "Boka Kotorska from Bell Tower to Bell Tower."

Verige of Today

Today, Verige is one of the most significant neuralgic points of the UNESCO area of Kotor and the rest of Boka Bay. Traffic through narrow straits during the summer months is incredibly intense. Cruise passengers are so often in a position to enjoy sailing regattas when sailing through the Verige and admire the skills of today's Bokelian sailors who navigate their course knowingly avoiding the "giants" with which they are passing by. And there are yachts, charter sailing boats, small wooden boats of the local families. Rush hour all day long. As well as a magnificent view.

verige view over parast islets

The Turks have never succeeded in building a fort in Verige. In addition to Our Lady of the Angel, who delighted Verige since the 16th century, if not before, no one came to mind to disrupt the untouched nature of the Verige huts, whose servants of greenery and rocks advise the traveler to enter into one of the most amazing and fascinating nature artworks- Bay of Kotor.

The Turks did not succeed, but independent Montenegro allowed itself to ensure all necessary documents and support the private investor to destroy the natural shape of the NW cape defining the strait of Verige. Despite the numerous public and citizen appeals, the Montenegrin Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism and cultural heritage services allowed the building of concrete construction at Verige. In this object is housed in an exclusive restaurant offering fine dining with views of Baroque Perast and its islets. No dilemma, a deep breath. The view from Perast is not that overwhelming, but it is how it is...

On the eastern side of the strait, just before the Church Our Lady of Angels, there is a natural sandy and rocky beach of about 250 meters, on which a temporary catering facility was built, called Verige. For the summer months, this is one of the favorite Boka beaches. During the winter, an exciting place to be protected from the wind and with a hot drink watching the wreck of Risan Bora, one of the strongest winds in Boka Bay.

Interesting is also the view of the strait of Verige from the ferry on the Kamenari-Lepetane line. Looking from this position towards Perast, you can imagine flying in some ancient times when small stone coastal settlements in Boka were divided by untouched green passages. Times, when only bell-towers of numerous churches of Boka disturbed the homogenous landscape of those little stone villages and towns, are gone forever. But, there are enough marks all around the Bay that could help us reconstruct the way of life made this area, besides its natural beauty, also one of the significant cultural regions in Adriatic through centuries.

02 December 2018 - For many years now, the development of winter tourism in Montenegro has been one of the country’s most important goals. The Government of Montenegro has invested about 50 million EUR in Kolašin, the city that will be the backbone of the development of winter tourism in the northern region of Montenegro.

In mid-October, representatives of Montenegrin Government have announced that the central part of the construction process at the “Kolašin 1600 Ski Resort” was completed, including almost one kilometre of roads to the ski resort.

Kolasin0112 1

At the end of autumn 2017, the construction of the Doppelmayr's six-seater cable car and the construction of the corresponding ski slopes, under the official name "K-8 Troglava" (named after the 2072 meters above sea level peak), has begun. Most of the works have been completed, all pillars with corrugated batteries on them, as well as the starting and exiting station of the cableway, are installed. The barges are six-seaters with six centimetres thick pillows. The cable car will have a sound system, security cameras along the route, and the Internet will be available to the skiers while driving.

Kolasin0112 2

The contractor for the cableway at the Kolašin 1600 site is the Austrian company – Doppelmayr, world's leading manufacturer of ropeways, cable cars, and ski lifts. With the completion of works at the 1600 location, Montenegro will get a new ski resort owned by the state. By building the access road, infrastructure and cableway, the state wants to create conditions for attracting investors who will construct more accommodation capacities and further develop the ski centre.

Prime Minister of Montenegro, Duško Marković, said during the Premiere Hour of the Assembly this week that the Kolašin 1600 ski centre is expected to be operational in the coming days.

On its Twitter account, the Government of Montenegro has released the latest snow-covered photographs of the ski resort.

December 2, 2018 - Skiing in Montenegro started at the end of the 19th century when a Norwegian officer brought skis to the Montenegrin capital of Cetinje and showed local people that their glorious mountain of Lovcen could be suitable for this sport that had never been considered here before.

Montenegro is traditionally associated with the summertime, but it is also a very popular ski destination, considering skiing in Montenegro is mainly based in beautiful areas of national parks. The most famous resorts of Montenegro are Kolasin and Zabljak. These are the perfect places to rest and play sports in the open, far from the noises of civilization. Although National Park Lovcen was the first ski destination in Montenegro, ski facilities are still weak and suitable mainly for children and less experienced adults.

Skiing in Montenegro - who brought it, and when?

By the end of 1892, in Austro-Hungarian Kotor, a young Norwegian officer, an adventurer, and traveler to unknown regions came. He was located at the hotel "Graz" and immediately began to inquire about the hunting grounds and mountain part of Montenegro. Locals took away his idea because it was a fierce winter. Still, they did not manage to poke. At the beginning of January 1893, Henrik found a young and strong guide, a certain Jovo, who organized a wagon that would carry his luggage and climbed trails with horseshoe serpentines from Kotor to Njegusi. His Montenegrin ski adventure, Henrik described later in the travel book "Skiing through Montenegro," which is a true bibliophilic rarity.

skiing in montenegro henrik angel

At Njegusi, Angel rested in the home of his guide Jovan. As it was customary in Montenegro then, where strangers rarely visited, the curious inhabitants of Njegusi came to Jovo's house, mostly seen people, worthy to be presented to one foreign officer. And nothing surprised them as a pair of first-time skiers; they did not know what could be done.

Immediately in the morning, on a hill covered by snow, in front of the locals, the Norwegian demonstrated standing on skis and then slammed down the slope. The observers were delighted.
The Montenegrins would not be who they are today if they did not want to try this immediately. There were falls, laughs, but for a short while, a few young men from Njeguši managed to get down the valley on skis.

Unfortunately, to the people of Njegusi, Henrik Angel continued his travel to Cetinje where had an opportunity to test his skills on skis down the slope. He would walk down the hill and wait for his companions. One young man who noticed a strange odor ran to the then editor of "Voice of Montenegrin" and said, "I saw the devil himself descend on the boards down the mountain, and there is snow left behind..." That was probably the first media report on skiing in Montenegro.

The first acquaintance with Cetinje a young Norwegian established with a French Counselor at the Montenegrin Court. His new friend explained many details about Montenegro to Henrik, including its famous history, customs and the lives of local people.

In his book "Skiing through Montenegro," Henrik Angel argues that Montenegrins are the true masters of the sport, and it was most surprising that he saw an attractive ice rink in Cetinje, one of only a few in Europe at the time. He claims that his acquaintances knew how to use a ball, were excellent runners, and knew other sports as well.
He described them as robust, slim and durable people. "I could not reach them when they went climbing up a mountaintop..."

He also described a competition that took place once a year and that the winner did not receive any prizes, but until next year he was an idol in his area. All these Spartan competitions Angel had experienced in Montenegro three years before the first Olympic Games held in Athens.

Skiing in Montenegro was Immediately supported by Prince Nikola

When the prince Nikola of Montenegro came to the strange tourist who was flying on the decks in the snow, he called him to the courtyard, and then came out on one slope to see Angel’s skill on the skis. The Prince was so enthusiastic that he had ordered ten ski pairs from Vienna to be delivered immediately for his officers. He then ordered tribal captains of Montenegro to get acquainted from Norway with all parts of his country.

Angel carried out several passes before the locals, who were so enthusiastic that the local carpenter of Niksic had made the first pair of skis only one day after Angel’s performance in his town. These were the first skis made in Montenegro. And the skiing school established by Angel and his French friend was the first ski club in Balkans.

In the Central Library at Cetinje, there is a rare copy of the book “Skiing through Montenegro,” written by Norwegian officer Henrik Angel, who brought the first skis to our country.  After his departure, skis and skiers could be seen in many places in Montenegro.

December 2, 2018 - Directorate of Fisheries at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has opened the Fisheries Monitoring Center, this Government's Office said.

Directorate of Fisheries realized the reconstruction and equipping of the premises within the framework of the project implemented by the Ministry, the Kingdom of Norway and the Ulcinj Municipality - "Sustainable development of the marine and coastal ecosystem through protection and cultivation of the marine fauna." The value of the project for equipping the premises is around 60,000 euros.

Through the previous two IPA Pre-accession Projects (EUR 1.2 million), fishermen's vessels received electronic equipment to connect to the satellite, and the Fishery Center has established a connection and a developed application that enables 24-hour monitoring of fishing boats at sea.

The Fisheries Monitoring Center officially opened the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Milutin Simović, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway Arne Sanes Bjornstad and Ulcinj Municipal President Ljoro Nrekić.

The establishment of the Fisheries Monitoring Center has more functions for further development of the fisheries sector in Montenegro and sustainable management of sea resources, Simović said. Ultimately, the project is dedicated to fishers, above all to make them safer on the sea in the difficult and responsible jobs they are doing. "The project will also provide sustainable management of sensitive fish resources. The Fisheries Monitoring Center should provide records and prevent any unauthorized actions at sea, primarily illegal fishing," said Simovic.

He assessed that particular value was the establishment of the Fisheries Monitoring Center in its upgrading, which will enable 24-hour monitoring and control of fishing boats in Skadar Lake. The equipment for this part of the projected Government will procure through the MIDAS 2 project.

Through the same project, fishermen's ports will open in Ulcinj, Bar, and Herceg Novi convinced the Deputy Prime Minister.

"Fishermen need fishing ports and the state's obligation to meet their needs," said Deputy Prime Minister.

It is certain that the first landing site, across the coast, will soon be open, which is of paramount importance for the work of fishers, as well as the monitoring of fishing and control of the safety and quality of fish and seafood.

Of the EUR 10 million invested through MIDAS 2 for the fisheries sector, the ambition is to direct the fishermen directly to five million euros to continue with the upgrade of the fleet.

"Therefore, please keep our partnership, dialogue between the fishermen and the Ministry, and the local communities, to improve this partnership and to be grateful to our EU partners, the European Commission, which is actively investing in this sector as well as bilateral partners such as is in a concrete project, the Government of Norway - Simovic said. He pointed to the importance of active involvement and scientific institutions, primarily the Institute of Marine Biology, which has a long tradition and excellent human potential.

We are not ready for Montenegro to be collateral damage as a result of the overshoot of the resources of other countries, is presented in intensive communication with the European Commission within the Mediterranean Fisheries Commission," Simović added.

"Montenegro is entitled to the draft of bluefish from 40 to 2,500 tons. I think that our partners have expressed this just about the relationship, and there is an additional obligation for us not to make the mistakes made by other Mediterranean countries, to keep resources, to use them sustainably and to suppress illegal activities," Simovic said.

Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway Arne Sanes Bjornstad is pleased that the Norwegian experience has helped Montenegro to protect the fish stock and the environment. "Montenegrin marine resources have great potential, but you have to manage these resources sustainably" - Ambassador Bjornstad said. He thanked the Government of Montenegro and the Ulcinj Municipality for good cooperation.

"The Ulcinj Municipality President Ljoro Nrekić said the project related to the sustainable development of the marine and coastal ecosystem began in 2015 with the aim of combating illegal fishing, especially the use of explosive devices. The project got full meaning and approaches us to the standards of developed countries," Nrekic said.
