TMN continues to search and recommend the best eats in Montenegro, and Šebelj is for sure one of them. Owned by the local family Popović from Grbalj, Šebelj has been the most usual pick for people from Budva, Kotor and Tivat for decades.
Šebelj is the old name for the historic region of Grbalj that spreads from Budva to Kotor and Tivat and is where you can find some of the best beaches in Montenegro: Jaz, Trsteno, Bigova, and some which are not so known but are of the same beauty: Žukovica, Zagorski Pijesak, etc.
When you leave Budva, it is situated on the 5th kilometer to Tivat on the E65 road, on the left side.
The Popović family have their own farm, and some of the food you'll have there are grown by them. The food is always served with freshly baked bread, kajmak and "urbenes" salad (kajmak with ground hot red pepper).
Šebelj is specialized in local Mediterranean cuisine, so you can always find fresh Adriatic fish there, but we would always recommend meat "ispod sača" prepared traditionally in a big ceramic pot under hot coals. Meat is prepared with whole potatoes, garlic rosemary, and pepper. This very simple and very tasty course is slow-cooked for a long time until it becomes so soft that it literally melts in your mouth. As a side, you should ask for the usual house salad of fresh cabbage and baked paprika (pečena paprika) made with garlic.
Note that they also have good veal soups and stews.
You can choose between lamb or veal, and don't miss out on trying the house red wine made by the Popović family.
