26 August 2018 - With the surface area of 16,630 hectares, National Park Prokletije is the fifth and at the same time the “youngest” national park in Montenegro, proclaimed in 2009. The park was named after the Prokletije Mountain, which occupies the majority of the national park, and it also includes two nature parks: Volušica and Lake Hrid. Tourists that visit the National Park Prokletije are mostly interested in strolling, biking and learning more about the park, conquering mountain peaks, visiting and cruising the lake, and they are curious about the numerous sightseeing spots. The tourist offer of the northern and central regions of Montenegro is becoming more attractive, which is confirmed by the increase of interest of tourists for the National Parks of Montenegro.
The National Park Prokletije was visited by 20% more tourists compared to last year, and the expectation is that up to 13,000 visitors will be welcomed by the end of the season.
The director of National Park Prokletije Admir Lalić says that the season exceeded their expectations.
"Most of the tourists come from abroad, nature lovers," Lalić explained, adding that it was mostly mountain climbers that visited the park this year.
The foreign tourists that visited National Park Prokletije this year came from Poland, Czech Republic, Netherlands, and more and more tourists come from Russia, while the guests from the region are regular visitors to Prokletije.
Lalić says that a number of infrastructure investments in the national park are needed.
"Investing in infrastructure works in the aspect of building roads to the Lake Hrid and to Grebaje should lead to the accommodation of more people in the next season," Lalić said and added that he hopes that the opening of the highway and the road to Dečani will exceed the expectations of tourists.
