May 6, 2018 - For the first time after the general remount in the shipyard Brodogradilište Bijela, the training ship Jadran started from its berth at the central Tivat promenade Pine on its first cruise. On board, along with the crew, are 48 students and three professors from the Faculty of Maritime Studies from Kotor. Captain Zoran Ivanovski commands the ship.

The training ship Jadran is part of the fleet of the Navy of the Army of Montenegro and one of the symbols of Tivat, its main port since 1933 when the vessel arrived from the German port of Hamburg where it was built at the shipyard "H. C. Silken Zon ". The Kingdom of Yugoslavia brought the ship year before using the funds that were partly collected by the Naval and Propaganda Organization "Jadranska straža" and partly by the Navy from war reparations and loans. The Jadran served and still serves as a training vessel.

Dean of the Faculty of Maritime Studies Dr Špiro Ivošević wished a successful cruising experience for the students onboard the Jadran. He expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Defense for his efforts to make this cruise happen. The project is also supported by the Municipalities of Tivat, Kotor and Herceg Novi, as well as the domestic shipping companies "Montenegrin Navigation" and "Barska plovidba".

"The Maritime Faculty has worked for the renewal and creation of a recognizable education system within the University of Montenegro for over six years. Last year, we accredited our study programs and can freely say that we are the only university-level education institution in Montenegro that meets all national and international standards, " Ivošević said.

The Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army of Montenegro Captain Svetozar Brajković, the Navy Commander Captain Vesko Tomanović, the Rector of the University of Montenegro Danilo Nikolić, representatives of the Ministry of Defense, and professors of the Faculty of Maritime Studies from Kotor also attended the departure of Jadran to its cruise to Malta.

On behalf of the Army of Montenegro, Captain Svetozar Brajkovic wished the students and the crew a good wind and a calm sea. "This ship is the pride of not only the Navy but of the Montenegrin state. Since entering Tivat in 1933, it has crossed over 400,000 nautical miles, 23 times on cruises. In 1937 she traveled to New York and Boston on her longest trip. She entered the history of maritime affairs and became a maritime classroom in which many officers and your predecessors made their first naval steps. Such rich history has conditioned that this ship must have a bright future. The ship was overhauled last year when its engines, communications and navigation equipment were changed to create conditions for better life and crew performance," Brajkovic said.

He stressed that this is the second cruise that the Ministry of Defense and the Army of Montenegro realized with the Faculty of Maritime Studies. The ship is also used for training students of the Maritime School from Kotor, by organizing cruises along the Montenegrin waters.

The Jadran arrival from the visit of Malta and Krf is scheduled for Sunday, May 13th. It is expected to come to the Kotor harbor in the evening.
