In 2009, Montenegro joined the group of 'Small States of Europe' and launched its National Olympic Committee. The 'Games of the Small States of Europe' (GSSE) is a biennial, multi-sport event organized by eight European states with a population of fewer than one million people since 1985. Apart from Montenegro, participating countries are Andorra, Cyprus, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco and San Marino, the last Games location in 2017.
The ninth member of the group, Montenegro will host the XVIII 'Games of the Small States of Europe' from May 27 to June 1, 2019. The Games feature competitions in eleven Summer Olympic sports: athletics, basketball, volleyball, cycling, gymnastics, judo, shooting, swimming, and lawn and table tennis. After five years of participation in the Games, Montenegro has received a total of 71 medals including 35 gold, 12 silver, and 24 bronze. The last Games brought the gold for Montenegrin athletes in judo, athletics and boules where Montenegro has a particularly strong tradition.
The Montenegro Olympic Committee estimated that it would need the support of at least 500 members from the volunteer support service to create such a competition. To do that, MOC has signed a Collaboration Memorandum with the non-governmental local organization Volunteer 2019 which will support the Games and contribute to promoting Montenegro as an excellent host. By participating in the annual job fair 'Career Days 2018' in Podgorica a week ago, the NGO Volunteers 2019 presented the upcoming Games and the opportunity for young activists to volunteer. About 45 volunteer applications were received then.
Currently, the Committee has announced a design contest for a unique and original mascot for the 2019 Games which will promote the event in all modern means of visual communication. If interested, you can apply your proposal in person or by mail in a sealed envelope to the following address:
