June 23, 2018 - The Prime Minister of Montenegro hosted a delegation of the Regional Commission for establishing facts about war crimes and other serious violations of human rights committed in the former republic of Yugoslavia (RECOM). By this occasion, he had a chance to speak to the main Coordinator of this Initative, Natasa Kandic.

On the behalf of Montenegro, the Prime Minister, as the country’s representative, expressed absolute support to this initiative, which is aimed at creating an interstate commission for establishing facts of all victims of the wars after the break up of Yugoslavia. Prime Minister Markovic noted that the civil sector has done a lot in this regard, but that it is now necessary to involve state institutions throughout the region so that the process can be successfully brought to an end.

"Montenegro wants this initiative to get the support of all the countries in the region, so that the generation to come can have a clear picture of the ugly part of our past, and never repeat it. We will do our best to make the idea come to life," said Prime Minister of Montenegro Dusko Markovic.

He stressed that the Initiative will be considered at the next Cabinet session.

"You do not only have my support as prime minister, but you will, I believe, have the support of the Government, and Montenegro will again show its responsibility and clear support. Also, we are willing to discuss this idea with the leaders in the region," Prime Minister Markovic stated.

Coordinator of the Initiative Natasa Kandic, Public Advocate for Montenegro Dragoljub Vukovic and RECOM Spokeswoman in Montenegro Tamara Milas thanked the Prime Minister for Montenegro's strong support for the initiative, as well as for the expressed will of the Government and the Prime Minister to back up the important process in the time to come.

"We have had all the doors open in Montenegro, we have been given support from all state institutions and opposition. That is why I have always felt good as a public advocate for Montenegro because in our country this initiative has never been brought into question," Dragolju Vukovic assessed.

Prime Minister Markovic and the RECOM representatives agreed that the processes of cooperation in the region, which have been strengthened by the Berlin Process, which is part of the RECOM, have significantly improved the climate to support the Initiative and further boost mutual trust in the region.
