01 October 2018 - Driving under the influence of alcohol, take over places where it is not allowed and the use of mobile phones are the main causes of traffic accidents on Montenegrin roads. However, traffic police managed to reduce the number of deaths in car accidents by 50% in comparison to the period ten years ago. The ultimate objective is to reduce the number of victims even more.

According to the data of Police Department, around 60.979 traffic violations have been recorded for the three months of tourism summer season.

Director Assistant of the Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Sector of the police of general competence, Nikola Janjušević, said that 3.809 drivers drove their vehicles under the influence of alcohol, slightly more than in the same period last year.

Headquarters of the Operation action “Summer 2018” was formed during the summer season and its main objective was undertaking appropriate measures and activities and cooperating with other authorities and institutions in order to provide safe summer season. One of the segments was also the provision of safe road traffic.

"Just like it was the case in previous years, the operation plan was brought and it referred to every organization unit which took part in the work of the headquarters. In comparison to last year, this year number of accidents was 0,2 % smaller, and, most importantly, the number of persons who died in a car accident is 13,1 % smaller than in comparison to last year. This year results are definitely more positive," said Janjušević.

He adds that police is constantly taking prevention measures and, when necessary, repression measures, in order to increase the level of safety in road traffic and reduce the number of car accidents. According to him, in the last ten years, the police has intensified activities in fighting the most serious violations in traffic.
