20 September 2018 - For more than 20 years, the Mountain Clean-Up Day has been celebrated each year on September 26th. Marking Mountain Clean-Up Day gives the opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of mountains and to highlight opportunities and constraints in their preservation.
This day is usually marked by performing ecological activities such as collecting litter, visiting nature and hiking. The mountains are extremely important for sustaining life on our planet. They provide us with oxygen, drinking water, give a home to numerous plant and animal species, but they also share their beauty with us.
Today, the mountains are threatened by the new dangers which are the direct result of globalization, urbanization and mass tourism. The sources of drinking water originating in the mountains are especially vulnerable, and more than half of the human population depends on it. Climate change also threatens mountains’ natural resources.
On the occasion of the Mountain Clean-Up Day, on Sunday, September 23, a cleaning of Kamensko polje will be organized, during which the new, retraced mountain path for the nearby mountain peak Siljevik (1452 m) will be promoted.
The organizers of the event are the Agency for Development and Protection of Orjen and the mountaineering club "Subra".
