October 9, 2018 - The Mediterranean Garden-Green School Project has entered its final phase, and the opening ceremony is scheduled in the coming days.

This project, which is implemented by the Capital in cooperation with the non-governmental organization Gorica and Nature Lovers, will receive a Mediterranean oasis in the open, which will have its continuity and will be an outdoor classroom, a nursery of Mediterranean species, a new corner in our town where we will socialize, study together, and create new ideas.

The garden will be open after the formal 'start-up' for visitors of all ages, in the hours to be defined. The opening of the Garden will be realized in cooperation with the Ministry of Science, within the framework of the event 'Open Days of Science 2018'. By participating in the workshops that will be organized on this occasion, elementary school students will learn about the characteristic Mediterranean plants, learn how to plant them one day in the Mediterranean garden, as well as in the playgrounds and parks. The richness and variety of the living world of Gorica will be shown to children through the projection of a short film, in a specially equipped part of the Garden, announced the Capital.

As pointed out, the project implies a kind of revitalization of a part of the Gorica hill, in the area of two Gorica massifs. The space was neglected in the sense that it was overgrown with invasive species and as such particularly exposed to fires.

"In relation to the original state, the space is almost completely transformed, the terrain is cleared, invasive species have been removed, we formed the so-called 'terraces' of the stones that were located at the location itself, made walking paths that were cut off by fallen trees from Gorica, backfilled with broken gravel, a protective fence was installed, electrical wiring, benches as well as an informative table," they added. The garden is, as pointed out, conceived as a nursery / incubator for the cultivation of autochthonous, endemic and reelected plant species. On the specially formed parcels within the garden, there was also the planting of mugworts, rosemary, lavender, lilies, balms, olives, camellias. "There are 100 specimens of oak tree planters planted using an oak tree grove at the top of Gorica. We plan to raise several hundred oak seedlings on an annual basis to renovate the mentioned forests or some other locality as needed/is possible, said the Capital.

The garden also has an educational component, part of the bridge - a "green classroom", is arranged, equipped, designed for presentations/lectures/projections of shorter educational films for pupils and students.

"This garden is actually an open-air classroom, given that children/young people will have the opportunity to get to know the Mediterranean species directly, learn about their significance, plant some of them, maintain them, and get acquainted with the concept that can be applied in their yards, parks," they explained.
