What’s in season
Strawberries have been on the market already for a month, but the price is still around 2,3-3 euro, and it seems this year is not the best for these red fruits. They are not as tasty and sweet, but still tender and juicy. I’d use them for a nice cream cake decoration, or if the price drops, for cooking jam.
Cherries of the sweet and sour kind are coming, yet they are a bit pricey (3-4 euro per kg) but I cannot resist them. I bought half a kilogram today I will wait for a better price to get the whole box of sweet cherries to enjoy with my family.
Peaches and apricots are already displayed at the stalls, but I’d recommend avoiding them until mid-June at earliest.
Buy local
Another red delight has just appeared on the market. Locally grown raspberries are packed in 250 gram boxes (3 euro each) and when you open them, you immediately meet their rich and charming smell. Eat them straight away; they are so lovely!
As for the vegetables, it’s definitely the time for greens: young cucumbers and peas together with bell and spicy peppers are great at the moment.
Young, small, and tender peas are the sweetest to eat. The season for them is short, so cook them in pods seasoned with sesame oil or peeled and stirred with carrots and onions. They are 2,5 euro per kg now.
New offer
Hot days are here, and ice-cold lemonade or a refreshing mojito is exactly what you need in the sunny afternoon, so why not keep some mint in the kitchen? And if you got those sweet spring peas, make a delightful minted butter pea garnish or a quick minty pea soup by Jamie Oliver's or Martha Stewart's proven recipes.
