11 October 2018 - The best solution for the Ulcinj saltworks would be to produce the high-quality salt fleur de sel (the flower of salt) and make the area protected. It’s necessary to invest 4 million EUR in the infrastructure, said the Information on the finalization of the study referring to the Ulcinj saltworks protection. The operative costs would amount to 1.1 million EUR per year, while it’s expected to generate a revenue ranging from 245,000 to 420,000 EUR from selling salt and visits to the protected area, as reported by Pobjeda daily.
“We can sell very limited quantities of fleur de sel on the European market, while the number of visitors would simultaneously increase,” suggested the study.
Other solutions propose the production of salt for roads and food which would require increased production due to low salt prices and high production costs. The first proposal envisages a 7 million EUR investment, while the second option would require 10.5 million EUR and 70 employees.
Contrary to table salt, fleur de sel is calcium-and-magnesium-rich high-end sea salt, and it’s harvested by hand which involves collecting the thin layer of salt that rises to the surface of shallow pools of seawater.
According to Ivana Vojinović of the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism, this institution will submit the final version of the study to the Municipality of Ulcinj in order to organize a public debate.
