May 10, 2018 - Podgorica will host Tara Smith, professor of philosophy at the University of Texas, on the 12th of May. This event will start at 6:00 PM local time and will be held at the City Hotel in Podgorica. Organizers behind this activity are The Lucha Institute from Montenegro and the Ayn Rand Institute from California. Also, this event is part of a Global Talks series which take place all over the world.

Global Talks is a series of international events organized by The Lucha Institute with the aim to connect business people, policymakers, politicians, and academics from different countries and introduce them to all opportunities that can be found in Montenegro.

This project will gather prominent experts from all around the globe and Montenegro in Europe. One of the goals of the project is to create a stronger relationship between states, but also it is an ideal place for introducing all opportunities for young people and future policymakers, people in business, academics, politicians and so on. We also hope that this Global Talks edition will become a traditional event that will produce new ideas and opinions that will change many societies for better.

Tara Smith is a professor of philosophy at the University of Texas. Dr. Smith’s primary interests concern the nature of values, virtues and the requirements of objective law.

Dr. Smith’s most recent book is Judicial Review in an Objective Legal System (Cambridge, 2015). She is also the author of Ayn Rand’s Normative Ethics: The Virtuous Egoist; Viable Values: A Study of Life as the Root and Reward of Morality; and Moral Rights and Political Freedom, as well as a number of articles in such venues as The Journal of Philosophy, American Philosophical Quarterly, Law and Philosophy and Social Philosophy and Policy. Recent articles include “What Good Is Religious Freedom? Locke, Rand, and the Non-Religious Case for Respecting It” (Arkansas Law Review); “Religious Liberty or Religious License? Legal Schizophrenia and the Case Against Exemptions” (Virginia Journal of Law and Politics); and “Something to Behold: On the Spiritual Value of Art and Sport” (Fair Play: Journal of Philosophy, Ethics and Sports Law). Smith’s current research focuses on intellectual freedom.

Smith holds the BB&T Chair for the Study of Objectivism and also holds the Anthem Foundation Fellowship. Dr. Smith is a member of the board of directors of the Ayn Rand Institute.

Her topic in Podgorica will be: “What it Means to Be Selfish – & Why You Should Be: Unpacking Ayn Rand’s Basic Moral Outlook.”
